The measuring campaign for the IAQ4EDU project has now been entirely completed

The IAQ4EDU project finishes the campaign of measurements about indoor air quality and thermal comfort in 20 schools in Catalonia.

The IAQ4EDU project, led by professor Marta Gangolells and professor Pablo Pujadas of the GRIC (Group of Construction Research and Innovation) research group, has completed the measurement campaign in educational centres with the participation of PhD students Juan Tugores and Sen Miao.

The measurement campaign collected representative data regarding indoor air quality and thermal comfort in educational buildings in Catalonia. In total, 20 schools were measured on-site in the (i) Barcelona Metropolitan Area, (ii) plain of Lleida, (iii) coastal area of Tarragona, and (iv) mountainous region of the Pyrenees and Montseny, encompassing Catalonia's four major climate types. The measurement campaign started in March 2022 and ended in January 2023, covering 3 representative season types: Spring (mild season), Summer (hot season), and Winter (cold season).

The next phase is to use the collected data to create a ventilation guideline based on the trade-off between indoor air quality and thermal comfort that minimises energy consumption and global costs for education centre. A multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework will also be developed to support investment decisions for the installation, improvement, and/or maintenance of ventilation systems in educational facilities. The research outcomes of the project are expected to be made public in September 2024.
